When to Start Lawn Care in Calgary

Calgary's climate is unforgiving — start too early and you damage dormant turf, start too late and you lose the season. Here's the exact timing to follow.

Calgary's spring is one of the most deceptive seasons in the country. You can have three inches of snow in late April, then 25°C days in early May. For property managers and homeowners managing lawn programs, knowing exactly when to start — and when to hold off — is the difference between a lawn that thrives all season and one that spends the first month recovering from an overeager start.

The rule: soil temperature, not calendar date

The most common mistake is timing spring lawn work by the calendar. In Calgary, that's unreliable. The last frost date historically falls between May 10 and May 25, but soil temperature is the more accurate trigger. Turf grass roots activate around 10°C soil temperature. Below that threshold, the lawn is still dormant — and working it (especially with heavy equipment like aerators) causes more harm than good.

For most Calgary properties, that threshold is reached reliably in late April to early May in southwest and southeast communities, and slightly later in northern communities like Airdrie and Olds.

Spring cleanup: what order matters

Once the ground is workable, the sequence of spring work matters:

1. Debris and winter damage assessment. Before anything else, clear the property of leftover leaves, branches, and debris that accumulated under snow. This reveals bare patches, winter kill zones, and areas needing overseeding.

2. Dethatching (if needed). A thatch layer over 12mm can block water and nutrients from reaching roots. Dethatching is done before aeration so loosened material can be removed.

3. Aeration. Core aeration in spring opens the soil for water, air, and fertilizer uptake. For Calgary's clay-heavy soils in many communities, this is not optional — it's the single highest-return treatment you can do annually. Aerate when the soil is moist but not saturated.

4. Overseeding. Bare or thin patches should be overseeded immediately after aeration when seeds can fall into the holes. For Calgary properties, a blend with Kentucky bluegrass and fescue varieties performs best through the dry summer months.

5. First fertilization. A balanced slow-release nitrogen fertilizer applied after aeration sets up the turf for the growing season. Avoid fast-release formulas on Calgary clay soils — they move through too quickly.

6. First mow. The first mow of the season should be at a higher blade setting (about 8–9 cm). Never remove more than one-third of the blade length in a single cut. Scalping a lawn that just came out of dormancy sets the turf back weeks.

When to start mowing regularly

Weekly mowing schedules for Calgary commercial properties typically start in early to mid-May and run through the first week of October. In years with dry summers, growth slows through July and August — bi-weekly frequency may be appropriate during those periods.

For condo corporations and commercial properties with high curb-appeal expectations, every-five-day schedules during peak growth (May–June) keep edges clean and turf density high.

What changes for commercial vs. residential properties

Commercial and condo corporation properties in Calgary have different maintenance windows than residential. Board meetings, resident move-in dates, and municipal requirements often drive spring startup timelines. For property managers, confirming your spring startup date with your grounds vendor in February or March ensures equipment and crew availability. Vendors who run tight route calendars — especially for first-season aeration — get fully booked by March.

The bottom line

For Calgary properties, the practical spring startup window is the last week of April to the second week of May depending on the year. Watch soil temperature, not the calendar. Do your cleanup and aeration before your first mow. And if you're managing a larger portfolio, confirm scheduling with your vendor early — the good programs fill up fast.
